Avant WorldSpeak

Avant has created its newest assessment to address the growing need of heritage language communities for rigorous, professionally scored and affordable assessments. WorldSpeak measures the speaking and writing proficiency levels of so-called Less Commonly Taught Languages, or LCTLs. Avant will launch the first set of online WorldSpeak tests in the fall in Alaskan Yup’ik, Somali Maay Maay, Somali Maxaa, Tagalog and Vietnamese. Programs plan to use WorldSpeak in similar ways to Avant STAMP: to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy, award Competency-Based Credits, and to analyze data to improve the curricula and introduce professional development to hone their teachers’ ability to deliver improved proficiency outcomes.

Students begin with a self-assessment based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) CanDo statements. Based on their score students are given four Speaking and four Writing prompts with three prompts delivered at the self-assessed level and one prompt delivered at a level above the self-assessed level. Responses are scored by trained and certified raters who are members of the language community. WorldSpeak provides the same detailed reporting as Avant’s other assessments. Avant plans to continue to regularly roll out new WorldSpeak assessments in additional languages throughout each year.
